RESUMO

Our main aim in this study was to analyze any differences in Win Percentages at Home (HW) that might represent a Home-Court Advantage (HA) in women's professional basketball. A secondary objective was to analyze how team ability might modify the HA effect by comparing any interaction effect between HW and team ability in games played with and without fans. We collected data from first Spanish female basketball divisions, using a linear mixed model (LMM) for repeated measures to identify differences between time periods (games with fans vs. games without fans) for HA and HW. When comparing games with and without fans, we found no significant HA and HW differences (p = .283 and p = .872, respectively). In fact, interestingly, we observed higher win values when fans were absent. Additionally, during the COVID-19 shut down stage, HA increased; but it returned to pre-pandemic levels afterward, with no significant differences between these periods (p = .482). Similarly, while HW seemed to increase during the COVID-19 shut down period and continued improving in the post-pandemic phase, there were actually no statistically significant differences (p = .772). Higher HA and HW were evident without fans during the pandemic compared to the pre-pandemic period when fans were present in women's professional basketball. During the post-pandemic period, HA decreased upon fans' return, while HW continued increasing. We discuss possible bases for these unexpected findings.

RESUMO

This article critically employs the case of association football in England, from 1980 to 2023, as a social movement timescape, to examine the political consciousness and long-term mobilisations of a generation of football supporter activists, and their capacity to influence politics, and respond to new, emerging, critical junctures, through networks of trust and shared memories of historical events. This is of crucial importance to sociology because it reveals the tensions between what are considered legitimate and illegitimate social practices which characterise contemporary society's moral economy. Focusing on temporal contestations over regulation, policing, governance and cultural rituals, the article deconstructs the role of generations in social movements, and critically synthesises relational-temporal sociology and classic and contemporary work on the sociology of generations, to show how legacy operates as a multifaceted maturing concept of power and time. In English football's neoliberal timescape, the supporters' movement has reached a critical juncture; the future will require a new generation of activists, to negotiate, resist and contest the new hegemonic politics of social control and supporter engagement.

RESUMO

Nuclei contain essential information for cell states, including chromatin and RNA profiles - features which are nowadays accessible using high-throughput sequencing applications. Here, we describe analytical pipelines including nucleus isolation from differentiated xylem tissues by fluorescence-activated nucleus sorting (FANS), as well as subsequent SMART-seq2-based transcriptome profiling and assay for transposase-accessible chromatin (ATAC)-seq-based chromatin analysis. Combined with tissue-specific expression of nuclear fluorescent reporters, these pipelines allow obtaining tissue-specific data on gene expression and on chromatin structure and are applicable for a large spectrum of cell types, tissues, and organs. Considering, however, the extreme degree of differentiation found in xylem cells with programmed cell death happening during vessel element formation and their role as a long-term depository for atmospheric CO2 in the form of wood, xylem cells represent intriguing and relevant objects for large-scale profilings of their cellular signatures.

RESUMO

Environmental sustainability is an imperative topic in contemporary business-related research, aiming to understand and predict how individuals' environmentally friendly behaviors can be encouraged. This research aims to empirically examine the relationship between individuals' pro-environmental attitude and pro-environmental behavior; and to compare two groups of individuals that encompass emotional and cognitive links to environmental sustainability: emotionally involved sport fans and socially conscious university students. Two studies, involving more than 1400 respondents, were conducted. Study 1 uses structural equation modelling (SEM) to test the relationship between consumers' environmental attitudes and environmental behaviors. Study 2 uses SEM multigroup analysis to compare the attitudes and behaviors of sport fans and university students. The results showed that participants' pro-environmental attitude had a positive and significant effect on pro-environmental behavior. The type of consumer plays an important role in strengthening the relationship between pro-environmental attitude and pro-environmental behavior. Despite the higher average levels of pro-environmental attitude and pro-environment behavior evidenced by the sport fans, the influence of attitude on behavior is higher on socially conscious students, the group with a more cognitive and intrinsic link with the natural environment and sustainability initiatives. Despite the positive link attitudes-behaviors, empirical insights suggest that the connection between sport fans and the club is vital to reinforce the commitment with a stronger match between attitudes and behaviors. The findings also have implications for practitioners and policymakers in optimizing their strategies to encourage effective pro-environmental actions.

RESUMO

Breakthroughs in digital technology are accelerating the development and commercialization of virtual idols. They are overturning the traditional one-way communication between idols and fans, turning fans into producers and consumers. Therefore, identifying the motivations for fan creation can regulate and guide the creative behavior of fans and turn their creativity into productivity. This paper took "the factors influencing fans' spontaneous participation in creating virtual idols" as the primary research question, took the Motivation Opportunity Ability (MOA) theory as the research framework, used questionnaires as the primary research method, and combined the relevant research on motivation theory and self-determination theory to explore fans' creative behavior from the psychological perspective in depth. The empirical tests revealed that in the motivation dimension, interest motivation, achievement motivation, social motivation, and utility motivation all positively influenced fans' creative behavior; in the opportunity dimension, fans' perceived cost had a significant negative moderating effect on the influence of interest motivation, social motivation, and utility motivation on fans' creative behavior; fans' perceived community atmosphere was substantial. The moderating effect of knowledge and skills on the capability dimension was insignificant. For the virtual idol industry, the future development of the industry could not only focus on IP image creation and content production but also effectively stimulate fans' creative motivation through the creation of an excellent community atmosphere, the provision of targeted creator services, and the reduction of fans' perceived costs in the creation process.

RESUMO

Introduction: The golden section or golden ratio (61.8% or 0.618) is a mathematical phenomenon that appears in art, literature, music and nature with such ubiquity that it is thought to be a fundamental principle of aesthetic organisation. The golden ratio also manifests in sport, particularly as the proportion of wins to losses required to win a Major League Baseball championship. This study extends early work on the golden ratio in baseball by incorporating more than three decades of additional data. Methods: This study involved a historically contextualized examination of how winning percentages have changed across the seven historical eras of modern baseball, including analyses of the relative contribution of offensive and defensive statistics to championship winning teams. Data was extracted from Baseball Reference and included statistics for 398 championship winning teams from both the American and National Leagues between 1901 and 2019. Pearson correlation coefficients were computed for winning percentage with indicators of offensive and defensive performance during each era. Main and interaction effects of Era and League on winning percentage were examined using factorial ANOVA, with follow-up analyses examining whether the golden ratio was included in each factor's 95% confidence interval. Results: Our findings suggest that winning percentages for championship teams were closest to the golden ratio during eras where the relative contribution of offense and defense was most closely balanced: the Integration Era (1942-1960) and the Expansion Era (1961-1976). Discussion: Previous scholarship theorizes that the golden ratio represents an aesthetic ideal or a Gestalt archetype. If this aesthetic theory is applied to sporting competition, these results suggest that baseball may be most aesthetically appealing to fans when offense and defense is balanced in such a way as to ensure that championship teams win 61.8% of their games.

RESUMO

Sport fandom has attracted far-ranging research attention. Fans' commitment, loyalty, and sense of affinity are abundantly expressed in a long list of life practices. Precisely in this context, the color that identifies each sports team has also become an important element of the game but also a crucial component of fans' identities. The present article focuses on the esthetics of team uniform colors and identifies the artistic roles they fill. Among other things, the article addresses the important role of color, for example in identifying and distinguishing figures on the pitch from the background by creating clear borders between the elements on the pitch that compete for fans' attention; in the extension of fans' emotions through the connection between team and color; in creating the opportunity for spectators to participate fully in creating the esthetic experience on the field through the intensive use of team colors; and in enhancing a team's halo effect through the association of the team with its colors. On a deeper level, the article states that in an era of commercialized sports, the team color remains the clear and consistent symbol of the team that preserves the identity of the fans.

RESUMO

Recent technical developments and the widespread use of social networks have led to the emergence of a variety of online communities built around common interests. Among these virtual communities, one notable category revolves around sports fans. This conceptual article uses several examples of online sports fan communities in Israel to analyze their core elements. Within this context, the article focuses on the significance of humor, trivial knowledge, and counter-modern concepts as the key elements fostering unity among fans. Humor serves as a common thread that encourages interactions, also providing a platform for fans to showcase their niche knowledge, symbolizing their dedication to fan culture. Meanwhile, the prevalence of counter-modern inclinations within these communities highlights the fans' constant devotion to the sport, demonstrating a profound loyalty. Collectively, these elements signify a shift from supporting specific teams to becoming keen fans of the broader sporting domain.

RESUMO

Introduction: The current study presents a thorough investigation of the attitudes and emotions expressed by the spouses and girlfriends of sports fans within the context of their long-term relationships. Its primary objective is to explore the potential ramifications that surface when individuals become deeply invested in a competitive sport, demonstrating intense emotional connections, broad knowledge, unwavering loyalty, and active engagement in fan-related activities. Methods: The research methodology applied in this study involved conducting semi-structured interviews with a sample of twelve spouses and girlfriends of fans. Results: The principal findings elucidate four distinct themes that shed light on the intersection of fandom and romantic relationships. These themes include: "that's what I signed up for"; "fandom as a gendered activity"; "the good, the bad, and the ugly"; and "sports fandom as an addiction." Discussion: The study concludes by highlighting the crucial cultural context at work. The social criticism expressed by the interviewees toward non-traditional gender behaviors displayed by their partners serves as a cautionary message. These criticisms aim to preserve and uphold male dominance in sports, thereby reinforcing the notion of their unquestioned supremacy. Consequently, we argue that, within this context, latent aggressive behavior in men is perceived as a strategy to maintain their monopolistic control over sports domains.

RESUMO

The past two decades in biomedical research have experienced an explosion of cell type-specific and single-cell studies, especially concerning the concomitant dissection of regulatory and transcriptional landscapes of those under investigation. Additionally, leveraging next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms efforts have been undertaken to evaluate the effects of chromatin accessibility, histone modifications, or even transcription factor binding sites. We have shown that Fluorescence-Activated Nuclear Sorting (FANS) is an effective means to characterize the transcriptomes of nuclei from different tissues. In light of our own technical and experimental developments, we extend this effort to combine FACS/FANS with Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin using sequencing (ATAC-seq), Chromatin Immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq), and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) for profiling individual cell types according to their chromatin and transcriptional states.

RESUMO

Research suggests that people at the interface of two different cultures may face a dilemma regarding how or whether to adopt aspects of the new culture in light of their existing cultural identity. A growing body of research in fan communities suggests that similar group processes may operate in recreational, volitional identities. We tested this by examining the associations between acculturation attitudes and identification with fan communities across three studies. Fanfiction fans, Star Wars fans, and furries completed measures of four different acculturation strategies with respect to managing their fan and non-fan communities as well as a measure of their identification with the fan community. Results across the three studies consistently found that integration and assimilation strategies positively predicted fan community identification, while separation and marginalization strategies negatively predicted fan community identification. Together, the results conceptually replicate and find evidence for the acculturation model.

RESUMO

The Bradost and Chinara mountains are two well-known geomorphic features in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR), forming two anticlines, besides Shireen and Sare Musa anticlines, which are located north of the Bradost anticline, all four anticlines trend NW - SE. The four anticlines are dissected by the Greater Zab River that swings along its course within the anticlines due to tens of very old landslides and/or plunges. The four studied anticlines are dissected by different thrust faults, which extend for a few kilometers. The thrust faults trend NW - SE; however, locally they deflect from the main trend. The Lower Jurassic rocks are the oldest exposed rocks in the studied area, whereas the rocks of the Bekhme Formation form the carapace of the Bradost and Chinara anticlines. Different structural and geomorphological features were interpreted from satellite images and those which are accessible were checked in the field, all of them indicate the four anticlines exhibit lateral growth. We have measured different aspects to elucidate the type of folds. The four anticlines are Detachment folds, with shallow decollement, which ranges in depth between (100-250) m.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The keeping of chickens in the backyard is growing in popularity in urban and suburban areas, numbers of animals are increasing and as a result small animal practitioners are more and more frequently faced with chickens as patient. Clinical conditions in backyard poultry often require the treatment of pain. The challenges regarding the adequate use of analgesics include: 1. Recognition and assessment of pain, which necessitates good knowledge of chicken behaviour, 2. Selection of the adequate drug and dosage based on evidence that is often not available for chickens, but spread over different species of birds, and 3. Implementation of food safety regulations, which result from the dual use of backyard poultry as «food producing pets¼. Analgesics used in chickens include opiates, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and local analgesics. The opiate butorphanol has been shown to have an analgesic effect of approximately two hours in chickens. Tramadol and methadone show some promise as analgesics, but more evidence is needed especially regarding bioavailability. The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs meloxicam and carprofen appear to have an analgesic effect. Variable metabolism between breeds of chickens and the risk of accumulation, especially when used for periods exceeding five consecutive days, need to be taken into account regarding dosage. Lidocaine and bupivacaine have successfully been used in chickens for nerve blocks and spinal anaesthesia and should be included as part of multimodal analgesia especially during surgery. In cases, where termination of life is necessary the preferred method consists of an injectable anaesthesia followed by intravenous application of a barbiturate.

Gorgonians, including sea fans, are soft corals well known for their elaborate branching structure and how they sway in the ocean. This branching structure can modify environmental flows to be beneficial for feeding in a particular range of velocities and, presumably, for a particular size of prey. As water moves through the elaborate branches, it is slowed, and recirculation zones can form downstream of the colony. At the smaller scale, individual polyps that emerge from the branches expand their tentacles, further slowing the flow. At the smallest scale, the tentacles are covered in tiny pinnules where exchange occurs. In this paper, we quantified the gap to diameter ratios for various gorgonians at the scale of the branches, the polyp tentacles and the pinnules. We then used computational fluid dynamics to determine the flow patterns at all three levels of branching. We quantified the leakiness between the branches, tentacles and pinnules over the biologically relevant range of Reynolds numbers and gap-to-diameter ratios, and found that the branches and tentacles can act as either leaky rakes or solid plates depending upon these dimensionless parameters. The pinnules, in contrast, mostly impede the flow. Using an agent-based modeling framework, we quantified plankton capture as a function of the gap-to-diameter ratio of the branches and the Reynolds number. We found that the capture rate depends critically on both morphology and Reynolds number. The results of the study have implications for how gorgonians modify ambient flows for efficient feeding and exchange.

RESUMO

Heat abatement strategies for pre-weaned calves are seldom adopted. Our objectives were to determine the effects of adding fans to barns on environmental conditions and growth, feed efficiency, concentration of metabolites and health of pre-weaned female Holstein calves. Calves born from July 15th to 30th of 2019 were eligible for enrollment. At birth (d 0), calves were assigned randomly to: SH (n = 125) - hutch under a barn with no cooling, SHF (n = 101) - hutch under a barn cooled through fans. Body weight (BW) and wither-height were measured at birth and d 68. Calves were evaluated thrice weekly (0700-1000 h) using the Calf Health Scoring Chart (UW-Madison). A sub-sample of hutches (SH = 26, SHF = 25) was evaluated for air velocity and temperature at 1000 and 1600 h thrice weekly and calves housed in these hutches were evaluated for rectal temperature (RT) at 1600 h and respiratory rate (RR) at 1000 and 1600 h. Calves were fed a liquid diet twice a day (d 2-18 = 5.56 L/d; d 19-49 = 7.58 L/d; d 50-56 = 3.84 L/d; d 57-63 = 1.64 L/d) and starter ad libitum starting on d 14. A sub-sample of calves (SH = 56, SHF = 44) had intakes of liquid feed and starter measured daily, BW and wither-height measured weekly from birth to d 68, and blood sampled on d 1, 14, 28, 42, 49, 52, 56, 58, 63 and 65 for the measurement of fatty acids, ß-hydroxybutyrate, and glucose concentrations. The SHF treatment increased air velocity by 0.8 m/sec and reduced air temperature by 0.3 ºC. The SHF treatment reduced RT (38.70 ± 0.03 vs. 38.78 ± 0.02 °C) and the percentage of calves with hyperthermia (RT ≥ 39.2 °C; 20.6 ± 1.9 vs. 30.2 ± 2.0%) at 1000 h. Treatment did not affect feed efficiency (SH = 0.53 ± 0.01, SHF = 0.53 ± 0.01 g of BW gained/g of dry matter intake), nor did it affect BW (SH = 81.6 ± 0.7, SHF = 82.9 ± 0.8 kg) and wither-height (SH = 89.5 ± 0.3, SHF = 90.1 ± 0.3 cm) on d 68. Concentrations of metabolites were not affected by treatment. Cooling the environment through fans reduced RT and the risk of hyperthermia at 1000 h but it did not affect performance of pre-weaned Holstein calves.

RESUMO

In a survey of 3,500 association football fans conducted by members of the research team over a decade ago, most participants predicted that at least one gay football player would feel comfortable enough to disclose their sexuality publicly by 2014, and that many other players would follow this lead in the following years. Ten years on, gay players can be found in all major sports, but association football remains an outlier. Using an anonymous online survey, we invited football fans to advance their own views on why events have not transpired as expected. A sample of 2663 participants revealed: (a) 95% would welcome openly gay players, meaning by implication, football culture is a more gay-friendly environment than wider society; (b) Participants attributed the continued silence of gay players to football's gatekeepers e.g., agents, managers, and owners; (c) Paradoxically, homophobic language is used by fans but is not considered malicious.

RESUMO

Resolving the complexity of the human brain at the level of single cells is essential to gaining an understanding of the immense diversity of cell types and functional states in both healthy and diseased brains. To exploit fully the technologies available for such studies, one must extract and isolate pure nuclei from unfixed postmortem tissue while preserving the molecules to be interrogated. Currently, nuclei are necessary substitutes for individual brain cells, since myriad cell types/sub-types constituting the human brain are embedded within the neuropil-a complex milieu of interconnected cells, processes, and synapses-which precludes intact and selective isolation of single brain cells. Here, we describe a protocol for the extraction and purification of intact single nuclei from frozen human brain tissue along with modifications to accommodate numerous downstream analyses, particularly for transcriptomic applications.

RESUMO

Tunnel fan is critical fire-fighting equipment, and its safe and stable operation is very important for the efficiency and safety of tunnel traffic. Existing studies commonly train the fault diagnosis methods with the goal of minimizing mean error which ignores the difference between classes in feature distribution. To solve the problem of inaccurate prediction caused by mean error evaluation, this paper presents a non-neural deep learning model, namely hierarchical cascade forest, which has three characteristics: (1) A hierarchical cascade structure is constructed, of which the output comes from each layer; (2) Each fault class is evaluated and recognized independently, the result of fault classes that are easy to distinguish is output earlier; (3) A confidence-based threshold estimate method is proposed in HCF and used to improve the training method to increase the reliability of HCF. Based on these, HCF improves the cascade forest structure and implements the proper matching of different depth of feature and fault patterns. The effect of HCF is verified through experiments based on the tunnel fans testing rig. Experimented results show that, compared to Deep Forest, the accuracy of HCF increases by 0.6% to 10.8%, and the training time of HCF is reduced 33.24%.

RESUMO

Introduction: We analyzed the importance of fan identity and brand strength on fans' neural reactions to different team-related stimuli. Methods: A total of 53 fMRI scans with fans of two professional sport teams were conducted. Following up on a previous study we focused on the differences between fandom levels as well as the contrast between two team "brand" strength. Neural responses were compared among individuals based on their levels of fan identity. In sum, group comparisons between relatively high and lower identity and between weak and strong teams were made based on the notion that the latter reflects team brand strength (strong brand and weak brand). Results: Findings indicate that brain activity in emotion regulation, memory, and cognitive control circuits is influenced by the relative level of fan identity. Discussion: Higher-level identified fans showed increased reactivity to positive stimuli and the under-recruitment of their cognitive appraisal circuits, suggesting more vulnerability to marketers' messages. The strength of the team brand activates different neural mechanisms. Interestingly, the posterior cingulate showed larger recruitment both for weaker brands and lower fan identification, suggesting that visual memory processes are more active in these cases. Neurally processed content depends on the relative brand's strength, highlighting the importance of brand-focused communications.
